Sample Day Program, Other Program Offerings and Services

PRE-SCHOOL PROGRAM

EMI believes that early childhood education is to foster competence in young children, though not only competence in intellectual areas.  Competence should be thought of as relating to all aspects of the child:  learning to live harmoniously with others, learning to master and safely express one’s feelings, and learning to love life and welcome new experiences.

The preschool program provides children with opportunities that encourage positive and hands-on learning approach from which children make a sense of their world.  Teachers should promote creativity, emotional health, physical prowess, social expertise and cognitive skills in a few brief hours each day.  Below is how EMI attempts to attain this end through its three-to-six mixed age group:

WELCOME/SINGING TIME

To set the proper mood for the day, children are invited to welcome each other to school through singing, action songs and poems.  They participate in movement and locomotion activities brought about by the singing.  The teacher engages the children to talk about the month, day and year of the particular day, the weather and cloud formation.  Singing can be accompanied by piano, guitar or pre-recorded accompaniment.

CIRCLE TIME

Toward the middle part of the period, children and teacher gather together in a circle in the main activity area.  The teacher takes the liberty of asking the children what transpired in their lives the day before or any event that may be special to the child. They are taught how to share their ideas and at the same time understand the ideas of others.  Much interaction is afforded during Circle Time because the teacher fosters activities such as “show and tell”.   The teacher takes the opportunity to introduce to the children other activities today such as in Math, Language Arts, Science and Story Telling.  The teacher conducts read-alouds or may invite a child to share a good book he has read.  Attendance is taken during this period.

WORK TIME

To hone development of cognitive skills, children become active participants in the learning process.  They pursue interesting subjects, analyze choices and making decisions and figuring out answers for themselves.  Children have the option to work in the different learning centers.  Some may be interested to go the Reading, Writing and Language Center for some quiet time with books.  Others may proceed to the Math and Science Center to make new discoveries and attain new concepts in numbers.  Manipulatives can be used by children in this center.  These may include blocks, clay, sand, puzzles, cubes or Legos.  To develop children’s creative process, they go to the Arts and Crafts center. This center is an environment that cultivate originality and where their original product is respected and valued.  Music and Drama is the center where children are encouraged to imagine and express one’s self.  Different costumes are displayed in this area.  The Laboratory Center where the computer is located is for the curious, where children search for answers to their questions through the use of technology.

PLAY TIME

The time to sweat and be dirty has begun!  An outdoor environment is an important part of the curriculum.  It is believed that the outdoor environment is as important as the indoor environment.  Sand boxes, water lagoons, safe play equipment should be available for the children’s use.  Children love to discover and search the surroundings about them.  They catch ball, play tag or simply run around.  Such activities  bring children into intimate contact with nature, deepens and challenges learning and encourages cooperative play.
